Day 37 of Lent

Title: “Curtains for You”

44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”  When he had said this, he breathed his last.       Luke 23:44-46

The curtain of the Temple marked the entrance to the Holy of Holies.  Only the priest was allowed to enter that area because God dwelled in that space in a unique and sometimes dangerous way.  The priest would tie a cord to his leg so that in case something happened he could be pulled out without risking the lives of others.  If you did the proper work of cleansing you were ok.  Meet all the requirements of the holiness code and you stood a good chance of making it out alive.

So what happens when the curtain is torn in two?  As the Son of God is dying on the cross and the world begins to change including the separation between us and the Holy of Holies.  Many people interpret the wonderful result of this event is that we now all have access to God.  There is nothing that separates us now.  I believe it.  Jesus cleanses us, covers us and is our mediator.  He is our priest who stands between us and the Holy of Holies.  He also happens to be God.

Do you know God personally?  Or do you play it safe by inserting other people or things in between you and God?  Why do we do that?  We are afraid of intimacy with God.  Is your relationship with God dependent on a minister?  Some people live out their faith through their pastor.  They confuse their relationship with clergy or others with a relationship with God.  How about your style of worship?  Does that protect you from intimacy with God?  How about inactivity or apathy?  If you don’t get serious about your faith you can protect yourself from knowing God.  I can think of other examples but you know what curtain protects you from an intimate relationship with God.  Knowing Jesus personally tears those curtains in two.

Suggested Prayer

Pray for discernment today.  Ask God what stands in between Him and you.  If it is anything or anyone other than Jesus,  pray that it would be shredded.
